Trump International Hotel in Washington DC, just five blocks from the White House, is set to be up for sale. Three years ago, the Trump family spent $200 million to open this historic Old Post Office hotel.
The hotel opened in late 2016, just before Donald Trump was elected President, and quickly became one of the biggest sources of income for his family, reaching $40.8 million last year. The high income is due to the large number of lobbyists, corporate executives and political groups staying at this hotel.
Representatives for the Trump family declined to answer why they decided to sell the hotel now. "A lot of people object because we make so much money from this hotel, and that's why we're willing to sell," Trump's son Eric Trump.
Most of the criticism relates to ethical issues and conflicts of interest because the United States constitution prohibits the president from accepting gifts or payments from foreign governments without congressional approval. Trump was previously charged with violating the constitution by accepting payment for his 263 hotel rooms from a foreign government.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump appointed JLL real estate agent and set a price of about $500 million for the sale of the hotel.
