For the first time since the independence of Singapore, the celebration of the National Day Parade in August will focus on bringing the celebration in the Singaporean's homes, instead of gathering at the site of the celebration like last year at Marina Bay floating platform. Themed "Together, Stronger Singapore," Singapore will celebrate 55 years of independence.
This year's parade will be divided into morning and evening. Many segments of the parade will be broadcasted live on TV and internet media, organizers said. This year's celebration will begin with a national broadcast message from Prime Minister Lee, followed by a parade that will be reviewed directly by the president of a large field near Singapore City Hall.
With the concept of delivering the spirit of the parade to every home in Singapore, the state flag, air show, and parachuting Red Lions attractions will take place in the city center. There are also special events to show appreciation to the first-line workers against COVID-19.
For the evening event, which will be held at The Star Performing Arts Center, it will feature performances of smaller-scale focusing on films and performances by Singaporean local artists. The celebration will conclude with a fireworks show at several locations throughout Singapore.
Chairman of the Parade Executive Committee 2020, Brigade General Frederick Choo said, "The parade this year will be a landmark one - for the first time since independence, instead of bringing the people who to gather and celebrate, now we are going to bring the celebration to every home in Singapore."
"Just like the last 54 years of parade, the parade in 2020 will remind Singaporeans to never give up, and that Singapore will continue to fight, and COVID-19 will not hinder our celebration", he added.
In a Facebook post, Defense Minister Ng Eng Hen said, "Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is impossible to celebrate the national parade in the traditional format, where thousands of organizers prepare and practice for months, and thousands of spectators gathered on the floating platform."
"Extraordinary times call for extraordinary action. Through this unique way, let us show that Singapore is indeed remarkable, Ng said.
