The World's Biggest Whale Shark in the Ningaloo Sea Marks a New Season

The world's biggest fish has just been discovered in Ningaloo Marine Park. Listed as a heritage site in Western Australia, the appearance of whale sharks has marked the beginning of the 2024 season.

These animals, which are harmless filter feeders and can grow up to 18 meters long, are regular visitors to Ningaloo Reef, the world's largest fringing reef. Every year between February and July, whale sharks migrate to the waters of Ningaloo to feed on plankton and krill.

Ningaloo Aviation owner, Tiffany Kelin, spotted them again this season and has witnessed at least three whale sharks in her last two scenic flights over Ningaloo and Cape Range National Park.

Swimming with whale sharks is an adventure listed on the bucket list of both local Australian residents and tourists. Ningaloo Marine Park is one of the rare places on Earth where you can come face-to-face with these ocean giants.

However, protecting these whale sharks remains a top priority. In the future, only 11 whale shark tour operators will be licensed to run tours for a maximum of ten swimmers at a time.

This year, whale shark observation tours officially began in Exmouth on February 28 and will run until late July, with tours from Coral Bay starting on March 1 and running until late June. These tours collaborate with spotter planes to find the best positions for groups to swim with the sharks.

Sarah Ellis from The Ningaloo Discovery Team revealed, "What makes it even more special is how mysterious these creatures are. Little is known about whale sharks. Humans have never seen a female whale shark give birth; and where they give birth, as well as where whale shark pups adapt, remains a mystery. Adult sharks are often found feeding at the surface, but they can dive to depths of 1,000 meters.”

In addition to whale sharks, Ningaloo is also home to various other species such as humpback whales, giant manta rays, dugongs, and spinner dolphins. It is important to preserve this fragile ecosystem so that its beauty can be enjoyed by future generations.
