The Space Needle is a tower located in Seattle, Washington, United States. It is a landmark of the Pacific Northwest and a symbol of Seattle. The Space Needle is 605 feet (184 m) high and 138 feet (42 m) wide at its widest point and weighs 9,550 tons. It was built in the early 1960s and is currently the tallest structure in the city.

History and construction

The Space Needle was built for the 1962 World's Fair, which drew more than 2.3 million visitors to Seattle. The exhibition was intended to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1909 Alaska–Yukon–Pacific Exposition, also held in Seattle. Thus, the Space Needle became an icon of that world fair and of Seattle itself. It was once the tallest structure west of the Mississippi River.

Today, the Space Needle is a major tourist destination, with over a million visitors per year, and is also home to the SkyCity restaurant at its peak. It offers an observation deck 500 feet (152 m) above ground level and a rotating SkyCity restaurant 500 feet (152 m) above ground level with views of Elliott Bay and downtown Seattle. There is also a gift shop located on the ground floor.
