Kuma River (Kumagawa) is one of the longest rivers in Kyushu, Japan, with a length of 115 km and a drainage area of 1,880 km². Located in Kumamoto Prefecture, the river is famous for its traditional rafting experience called the Kumagawa Kudari, offering a thrilling water adventure amidst the natural beauty of Kumamoto.

Location and Access

Kuma River is located in central western Kyushu, precisely in the Oguni area, Kumamoto Prefecture, which borders Ōita. The river stretches from the Kyushu Mountains to the Yatsushiro Sea.

You can reach Kuma River from Kumamoto Station by JR Kyushu train to Hitoyoshi. The journey takes about 2 hours, and from the station, you can continue your journey by bus or taxi to the rafting location. For those using private cars, access to the river is also quite easy with parking available at the rafting location.

Kumagawa Kudari Rafting is the main activity on Kuma River, offering a thrilling experience using a traditional wooden boat. The strong river currents at several points provide their challenges for adventurers. While enjoying the excitement of rafting, you will be presented with views of cliffs, green forests, and clear river water.

Kuma River offers beautiful views throughout the year, especially in spring and autumn, where the trees change color, creating a stunning backdrop. Rafting prices range from 5.000 to 7.000 yen (around 700.000 IDR–1.000.000 IDR) per person, depending on the tour package chosen.
