Tracing the Footsteps of Coca-Cola

The first glass of Coca-Cola was sold in 1886, marking a new era in the world of soft drinks. The company's rapid expansion occurred over several decades, supported by new bottling processes and marketing prowess. By the early 1900s, Coca-Cola became a leading advertiser in America.

It wasn't until 1962 that Coca-Cola launched its first diet beverage: Tab, interpreted as "keep tabs on your weight." In the fitness craze of the 1970s, Tab became a significant success. While original Coca-Cola maintained a 60% market share of soft drinks, the sales of diet beverages grew three times faster than other categories.

The Bold Risk on Coca-Cola's Name

Coca-Cola executives were concerned that all the brand equity they had built in the name Coca-Cola would be lost if Tab became its biggest money-maker. In response, in 1980, a secret team within the company started working on Diet Coke.

The team chose to use aspartame as the artificial sweetener in Diet Coke, predicted to "cannibalize" Tab. However, the word "Coke" remained in its name, preserving brand equity. Several name options like "Sugar-Free" Coke or "Light" Coke were considered, but ultimately, the choice fell on "diet" with a lowercase "d" to avoid trademark conflicts.

Successful Launch and Emphasis on Taste

The launch campaign of Diet Coke in 1982 didn't emphasize its "diet" nature but highlighted its taste. Diet Coke was marketed as a smoother beverage due to its lower phosphoric acid content, with the motto "Just for the taste of it."

It didn't take long for Diet Coke to become the most successful diet beverage by the end of 1983. In 2020, Diet Coke even surpassed Tab in sales. Meanwhile, its status as the second-best-selling beverage globally (after Coca-Cola) from 2011 to 2015 proves that Diet Coke remains a major player in the global soft drink market.

Challenges and the Potential for Formula Change

Despite its continued popularity, Diet Coke is not without challenges. Aspartame, the artificial sweetener used in Diet Coke, has recently been labeled a potential carcinogen by the World Health Organization (WHO). Coca-Cola stated that it won't change the Diet Coke formula soon but may eventually switch to a natural sweetener.

Currently, diet beverages contribute one-third of Coca-Cola's annual sales, reaching over $40 billion. Diet Coke maintains approximately a 9% market share in the soft drink industry, demonstrating that innovation and creativity in the world of soft drinks can create lasting historical changes. As an integral part of Coca-Cola's journey, Diet Coke will continue to ensure it remains relevant and continues to color new pages in the global soft drink history.
