This Legendary Luxury Hotel In Bangkok Is Massively Renovated

The Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, Bangkok's first luxury hotel, is over 143 years old

Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, Bangkok's first luxury hotel that is more than 143 years old, spent an estimated US$90 million on renovations. The hotel renovation, which began in November 2019, is scheduled to be completed around April 2020.

The renovation was led by Jeffrey Wilkes, a successful interior designer who has worked on luxury hotel projects in Asia including Mandapa, Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Bali, and W Goa. For the renovation of the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, Jeffrey took inspiration from the Chao Phraya River. Traditional Thai boats made of brass emerged as motifs throughout the public rooms and rooms, and more than 10,000 meters of new silk fabric were purchased to adorn the hotel's rooms and suites.

The hotel lobby, which is Bangkok's most photogenic lobby, has also been heavily renovated but retains the signature ceiling and wood framed windows. The ceiling will be decorated with bell shaped lights, each made of 2,460 pieces of Bohemian crystal. The previous flower carpet was also replaced with a brighter color choice.

The specially renovated room is a suite type dedicated to Jim Thompson. Jim Thompson is an American businessman and co-owner of the hotel from 1946 to 1967. This suite features a large temple-style mural, vintage chairs, and an antique cabinet full of old collectibles that Thompson has collected from his travels to Southeast Asia.

In addition to building renovations, Mandarin Oriental is also reducing its use of plastic by using aluminum for toiletries and offering environmentally friendly biodegradable water bottles.
