Schengen Visa Digitization for Travelers: Simplifying the Application Process

Tourists entering the European region will now benefit from a digital Schengen Visa, which has been officially introduced to facilitate the immigration process.

Schengen Visa Digitization — It is likely that the visa procedures for entering the Schengen Zone, consisting of 27 European countries, will become simpler and faster as the entire process is being shifted online, from application to issuance. Applicants will be able to apply for the visa online and receive a 2D barcode digital visa that is cryptographically signed. The EU aims to improve the efficiency and security of the Schengen Zone through this measure, as stated in an official statement.

The Swedish Minister of Migration's Official Statement on the Digitization of Schengen Visas

According to Maria Malmer Stenergarz, the Minister for Migration of Sweden, the implementation of a digital Schengen visa will simplify the application process for legitimate tourists and enhance the security of the Schengen area. Online applications will reduce the number of trips to the consulate for tourists and improve the efficiency of national administration, while eliminating the risk of visa sticker counterfeiting and theft.

The proposed rule includes the creation of a new website where visa applicants can initiate and complete the application process by adding necessary data and uploading electronic copies of their documents. Payment of the visa fee will also be done on the platform, and applicants will receive notification of their visa decision.

For first-time applicants or those with invalid biometric data, an in-person appearance at the consulate is required. Additionally, applicants with new travel documents must also visit an embassy/consulate or visa application centre.

If an applicant plans to visit multiple countries in the Schengen area, the platform will automatically determine the responsible country for evaluating the application based on the duration of stay. Once all stages are completed, a digital form of the Schengen visa will be issued in the form of a 2D barcode that is cryptographically signed.
