The Jolotundo Temple was built by King Udayana of the Bedahulu Kingdom in the Warmadewa House in Bali. King Udayana married Princess Gunapriya Dharmapatni from the powerful Medang Kingdom in Java. The Medang Kingdom conquered Bali, established a colony in West Kalimantan, and launched an attack on the Sriwijaya Kingdom.

Every Suro night, many people, especially Balinese, visit the temple to perform religious rituals and clean themselves at Petirthan Jolotundo. Visitors can take water from the temple's source to take home without any limit. The temple has two springs or bathing pools surrounded by stones on the left and right sides, with spring water coming out of a hole in the middle of the rock wall on the east side.
