Air New Zealand plans to provide bunk beds in economy class for long-haul flights. This latest innovation is named Skynest.

Skynest is a pod similar to a capsule hotel, having six beds arranged on three levels. This facility allows economy class passengers to lie down on long flight routes such as the Auckland-New York route which takes almost 18 hours.

Skynest will also be equipped with pillows, bed linen, blankets and earplugs, as well as privacy curtains. Some other features under consideration are reading light, USB charger and individual ventilation.

After obtaining regulatory approval for operation, it is planned that Skynest will be installed in the inter-cabin section where food carts and toilets are usually located. For the moment the price has not been determined, but Skynest will be sold as a separate facility that can be used in turns by passengers who pay extra. The flight attendants will clean and change the bed sheets for each new user.
