Location

History

Mendut Temple was built by the first king of the Syailendra dynasty in 824 AD. This allegation is based on the contents of the Karangtengah inscription (824 AD). This temple was first rediscovered in 1836. Mendut Temple has various reliefs such as Kuwera or Avataka and Hariti.

Mendut Temple has the basic shape of a rectangular building with a total height of 26.40 m. Like other Buddhist temples, Mendut Temple has a small stupa at the top of the temple. Mendut Temple has a characteristic with a giant statue as high as 3 meters. This temple was discovered by J.G. de Casparis in 1950.
