Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) is one of the main means of transportation in Singapore. The network spans from north to south, from east to west. The reason why many people choose to take the MRT is because it is convenient, cheap and relatively fast. This article will guide you (especially those traveling as tourists) how to take the MRT.

Step 1: Find the nearest MRT station

Look for signs (see image below) indicating you are near/around an MRT station.

Step 2: Refer to the MRT network map

The MRT network map (click the image below to view a large image) is widely available at every MRT station (near the entrance, at the ticket machine or at the passenger service counter). You can also get pocket maps/brochures at hotels, tourist and shopping centers. Decide which station you are at, then your destination station and how many stops/transfers you have to take to reach your destination.

Step 3: Use EZ-link card or standard ticket

If you frequently travel by MRT/bus, you should buy an EZ-link card (see image below) at the ticket office (not the passenger service counter). This EZ-link card is similar to BCA Flazz, it can be used for various payment transactions in Singapore. With the EZ-link card, you pay cheaper MRT/bus fares than using standard tickets. In addition, you will also get a discount when transferring MRT/bus.

General Ticketing Machines (GTMs) are ticket machines located at each station to refill EZ-link cards or buy standard tickets (green). Standard tickets can only be used for one trip and are usually up to 2x more expensive. If you bought a standard ticket, don't forget to return the ticket at the same machine to get your S$1.00 deposit back within 30 days.

Step 4: Check in and wait on the platform

Check-in can be done by holding the EZ-link card/standard ticket in the reader machine at the gate. Platforms for waiting trains are usually located one or more floors above or below the entrance. Follow directions and use the escalator or elevator to get to your platform. Destination information and train waiting times can be viewed on plasma TVs around the station.

Step 5: When the train arrives…

Don't get too close to the guard rail/gate, stand behind the yellow line. Give the other passengers a chance to get off the train first, and don't cut off other passengers. Finally, get on the train and enjoy your ride.

The Don’ts on MRT trains…

Regulations in Singapore are very strict, so don't do any of the prohibited things below, especially eating/drinking at stations and trains.
