This small window is often found in the city of Florence, Italy. What's the use for?
Buchetta Del Vino is a small window measuring about 30 x 20 cm used to serve wine to buyers.
In 1559, Cosimo I de' Medici decided that the owners of vineyards in Florence could sell wine directly to buyers, without going through bar intermediaries or innkeepers. Since then, many families who own vineyards in Florence have started selling wine directly from their homes through these tiny windows.
In the 1630s, during the Black Death pandemic, buchetta del vino became very useful. Wine sellers can still serve buyers because of the lack of interaction.
In the midst of the Covid-19 outbreak, the buchetta del vino is now starting to be used again by the Italian community, especially in the Florence and Tuscany areas. Now not only wine or wine that can be served through this window, but also coffee, gelato, ice cream, other drinks and snacks.
